演化
爵床科植物出现于距今约8200万年前的白垩纪，在那时与其姊妹群狸藻科Lentibulariaceae分化。
距今约8100万年前，瘤子草亚科Nelsonioideae与其他爵床科分化；距今约7500万年，海榄雌亚科Avicennioideae山牵牛亚科Thunbergioideae与其他分化，之后两者于距今7000万年前分化；老鼠簕亚科Acanthoideae与爵床亚科Justicioideae于距今7000万年前分化。（系统发生关系见后文）
6500万年前白垩纪末，一颗陨石砸向地球，结束了中生代。除了瘤子草亚科冠群白垩纪就已分化以外，其他各亚科冠群（下级演化支）均于新生代开始分化。爵床科是从新生代开始崛起的。
分化时间见如图
爵床科至少13次从旧大陆进入新大陆（长距扩散事件），有趣的是，从新大陆返回旧大陆只发生了一次。这13次其中的11次事件均发生在过去约2000万年间，尽管爵床科冠群的年龄是这个时间的4倍。一项模拟研究证实，这些扩散事件显著偏向于近期发生，而并非简单的随机事件。［1］

词源
爵床科的学名Acanthaceae由模式属老鼠簕属学名Acanthus的复合形式Acanth-加上表示科的等级后缀-aceae构成。该词为复数形式，故在做主语时应与动词的复数形式搭配。
本科中文名与模式属老鼠簕属中文名不一致。因为老鼠簕属非日本原产，故日本学者选用爵床属（Rostellularia）为本科命名，之后这一日文科名又被译为中文科名。

特征
爵床科植物一般为单叶对生，叶中一般含有钙质钟乳体，所以看起来叶表面都有条纹。花是完整的，但花为两侧对称或辐射对称的，一般为总状花序或伞状花序，尤其是有典型的带颜色的苞片，有的品种苞片相当大和鲜艳。花萼4裂或5裂，管状花冠5裂或2裂，雄蕊成对，子房两室，一般朔果有两个种子，容易爆裂。大部分种类种子有一个种钩，用于从朔果中弹出。种子没有胚乳，具大胚芽。

分布
爵床科植物大部分生长在热带地区，主要是草本、灌木，也有一些藤本或多刺植物，只有少数种类可以生长在温带地区，分布最广的地区为南亚、中南半岛、非洲、巴西和中美洲。
