    To what Extent was Charles I Responsible for the English Civil Wars?
    Since Charles tried to arrest five parliament members in 1642, the English civil war broke out, sending many innocents to the war field away from their homes. 868,000 people died in the war, and over 60 thousands of them were Irish (Ireland supported the King). This war was caused by the breaking up of King Charles I and his Parliament. It ended by the victory of Parliament in the Battle of Worcester in 1651, which showed Parliament had won. The cause of the war was economical, religious, political, and it also had many personal reasons. For over years, historians discussed who’s fault it was for the war. It is clear that,however Charles I was responsible and mostly to blame, James I was partly to blame too.

      Let’s take a look at the background. Despite the long term causes of Henry the VIII, who brought religious problems (Which was definitely not Charles’s fault) James was actually the first to make Parliament angry. By money problems, James clashed with Parliament and dismissed it in 1611. He was also the one who suggested to find Charles’s Catholic wife. On this thought, who could fully blame Charles of breaking up with Parliament? It was not Charles himself who made Parliament so angry. The Parliament’s angry was built down a long time ago from the rulers of England.

        Both the father and son have a belief that worsen the relationship between the Crown and the Parliament. James was a king who believed in “The Divine of Kings”, which was to say that kings were selected by God, and are not to be mistaken. He passed this belief to his bad-tempered son. Charles tended to help George Villiers in 1625 by giving him money for his expedition without thinking about the result. He lost his temper to Parliament when they did the wise thing, which was not raising much money for Buckingham. Also, in 1627,Charles refused to help the Protestants in the war of King Louis XIII in France. The reason was simply not to depress his Catholic wife and brother-in-law. When Parliament had been dismissed in 1629, Charles tried to raise money for himself by collecting ship money which was only supposed to be collected when the country’s at war. This caused a complete crisis all over the country, the tax was closed, soon Charles had to call Parliament back again. Evidence proved that Charles hardly thought about the feeling of the local. He was definitely not a good leader, but we shall not forget that James is the one who brought him up, impacting his beliefs. Sadly, the belief he passed on to his son was not suited for a leader.

          Before being dismissed, Parliament was probably most angry about Charles’s biased religion. Before Charles, however, James had first written the book The Book of Sports. It is not like its name though, it had included many orders that people should do on Sundays, which were all tightly connected with religious problems. James tried to soften the problems between Puritans and Catholics by telling the local to practise Catholic religions. Because of this, he discussed the book with Catholics. Charles was the one to bring out the book though, so the local mainly blamed him instead of James. Also, besides publishing the book, Charles also has a Catholic wife, Henrietta Maria, whom he is biased to. His followers were not any better, William Laud as a best example. After being the Archbishop, he sent a law to people that they can only say one prayer, which completely offended the Scots, that’s why they turned against the King first in the war.

            Coincidence or not, although the father and the son both thought they were the One who was Chosen by God, they were actually more affected by other people, James and his Catholic counsel, Charles and George Villiers,etc. Sadly, as James was more intellect, he decided to choose ones that would not upset the public. Thomas Morton, for example, although he supported the king strongly and helped him issue the book of sports, he was strongly against the Roman Catholics, which quite approved the thoughts of the local Puritans, also including the Parliament. Charles on the other hand, only liked the men who supported him and his wife(mostly religion), completely ignoring the others’ opinion. George Villiers was only one of them to provoke Parliament. However, his father James heavily influenced him as well. Villiers used to be so close to James that he called him”sweet child and wife”. It would not be strange for anyone to put trust in someone who his father really liked. In a word, Charles need to take most responsibility, but James also took a great part.
