Thisdramatic story has always fired the imagination and fuelled debate. And, overthe centuries, the crusades have been subject to startling variedinterpretation: held up as proof of the folly of religious faith and the basesavagery of human nature, or promoted as glorious expressions of Christian territory. The crusaders themselves have been depicted as both land-hungry brutes andpilgrim soldiers inspired by fervent piety; and their Muslim rivals portrayedas vicious and tyrannical oppressors, ardent fanatics or devout paragons ofhonour and clemency.

Thisbook explores the history of crusades from both the Christian and Muslimperspective-focusing, in particular, upon the contest for control the HolyLand-and examines how medieval contemporaries experienced and remembered thecrusades. It draws upon the wonderfully rich time of available written evidence(or primary sources) from the Middle Ages: the likes of chronicles, letters andlegal documents, poems and songs; recorded in languages as diverse as Latin, OldFrench, Arabic, Hebrew, Armenian, Syriac and Greek. Beyond these texts, thestudy of materials remains-from imposing castles to delicate manuscript art andminuscule coins-has thrown new light on the crusading era. Throughout, originalresearch has been informed by the great outpouring of modern scholarship in thefield witnessed over the past 50 years.

※Even in the modern era manyhistories of the crusades written by ‘western’ scholars have been colored(consciously or unconsciously) by a degree of bias, because most present thisera from a Christian point. This innate partially might manifest itselfrelatively subtly-in the decision to describe the outcome of a battle as avictory or defeat, a triumph or disaster. In this accountant, which is dividedinto five part, I have made a deliberate to counteract this tendency byswitching the point of view from western European Christian to Near EasternMuslim in each major section. The book’s core, covering the Third Crusade, alternates between its two major protagonists-Saladin and Richard theLionheart.

Inthe year 1000, the country of Anjou (in western-central France) was ruled by FulkNerra (987-1040), a brutal and rapacious warlord. Fulk spent most of hisfifty-three years in power locked in near-constant struggle: fighting on everyfront to retain control of his unruly country; scheming to reserve hisindependence from the feeble French monarchy and preying upon his neighbors insearch of land and plunder. He was a man accustomed to violence, both on andoff the battlefield-capable of burning his wife at the stake for adultery and oforchestrating the ruthless murder of a royal courtier.

2.“Those who died were thought of as martyrs, while survivors believedthat their souls had been scourged of sin by the tempest of combat and trailsof pilgrimage.”
                          3.楼主把“the country of Anjou”翻译为安茹郡。
