《42》这首歌歌名取自于英国的一篇著名的科幻小说《银河系漫游指南》，小说里那台宇宙中第二强大的超级电脑——Deepthought（深思）花了750万年时间计算生命、宇宙以及一切的答案的结果是：42。由此看来，将42解释成宇宙中一切存在却又解释不了的规律或事物的代名词更确切些。另外，主唱chris在被问到“42”的含义时，解释说， 42是个的吉利的数字，因为整张专辑的歌曲总播放时间为42分钟。其他有关于“42”的猜想也层出不穷。
